If 2022 was the year of getting SYM started, then 2023 was the year that it became truly established at the centre of the world of music in Scotland’s schools. In only 2 years, SYM has become the largest and most important national music competition in schools, taking last year’s winner on a journey from Stirling to play at No.10 Downing Street.

Analysis & Review of SYM 2022

The aim of Scottish Young Musicians was to offer every school student, who plays a musical instrument or sings, a platform to compete against like-minded students to achieve their musical ambitions, develop their life-skills and have fun. 

In this Analysis and Review report, we share the successes and impacts of our inaugural Scottish Young Musicians competitions.

I am excited to see the growing appeal and success of these competitions in schools across the country. They will be of immense help and encouragement for the aspirations of thousands of young Scottish musicians. As they say, it’s not the winning that counts - it’s the taking part and learning a lot about oneself as a developing musician, being able to contrast and compare one’s progress with one’s young colleagues.
